I had to read this piece a few times to really understand it (or at least pull out a few key ideas).

I found the advertising/image ideas of Rosiland Coward and Myers quite interesting. I am sure we have all paged through fashion magazines at some point in our lives. Many of these magazines are full of advertisements for fashion, jewelry, and cologne and contain photographs of scantily clad men and woman. Many times, that may be all the advertisement contains.

I decided to search for the original advertisement of the Guess? Jeans ad from our reading. Even though the photo was shot in black and white and altered to give it hues of gold and bronze, I feel this advertisement is pushing the limits and can quite possibly be considered pornographic.

I am not a prude by any means, but a mom to 2 daughters and would have a lot of explaining to do if they were to see this advertisement in a magazine and wonder why these naked people are an ad for men’s cologne.

I assume the majority of my fellow classmates are true college aged students. I would be curious to hear what you think of this photograph.

  1. I agree and like this post. There are tons of advertisements like this and it is almost like why do they do it? I know it is supposed to be that "sex sells" but does it really? Like are people buying the cologne because they see the naked people on it or because of the scent. I don't know it seems a little crazy to me. People may look at it and see a good looking guy or girl, but in reality you most likely do not look like he or she, so what is the true reason of buying the product?

  2. I am so glad you found the origial imagry, I tryed searching for a bunch of the images but was not able to find them. My photocopied images just don't help potray what was being talked about. I think the photo is fine, certain groups in society read into certain images way too much. I think it is a nice piece of art and there is no shame in the naked body. It should be celebrated- what are we in the dark ages? Great job and thaks for finding the photo?

  3. I agree with what Alexa said; what does naked men have to do with cologne? It seems like all/ the majority of perfume and cologne ads show the human body suggestively. I don't see the link between nakedness and scent, but as Alexa referenced "sex sells" and people but the perfume or cologne because they want to smell sexy.
